Bumpdate (aka pictures of me)

Jason stays up much later than I do, and so we have a nightly tuck-in routine. A ritual involving vitamins, cracking the window, water bottle, back pillow, feet elevated and ice pack for the ankles. He is VERY good! The other night he set me up and joked that it made pregnancy look cushy. He may have snapped the picture but I beat him to posting it, to be sure to say--Pregnancy is much harder than it looks. Look closely at what I'm surrounded by--insulin pump, laptop to double check carbs, and clipboard for recording glucose and insulin. I have a hard time getting out of bed or as I realized today at school, getting off the floor. Could it be worse? Absolutely,I've heard the stories, but I don't think any pregnancy is "cushy."

And only semi-related...
I forgot that Bun would need a bathing suit! Mom G sent one that is so flipping cute!
And my progress at week 30

Only 7 and 1/2 weeks to go now...not that I'm counting.

A Conversation Our Child Will Never Have

Around 2:00 today, I looked over and realized Caleb did not look well (watery eyes, pale, tired). Here is the conversation that ensued...

E: Cal, are you feeling ok?
C: Not really. That's why I said I wanted to rest.
E: I know but we didn't have time to rest today. Maybe you can take a nap after school.
C: (looking put out) Not really. Our flight leaves so late at night, like 10:00.
E: (forgetting the family is going on a ski trip) Oh right, well you can always sleep on the airplane. I do!
C: (giving me what in hindsight was probably a "you won't believe this" look) No I can't! (Arms fly into the air in exasperation) We're in coach!
E: Honey, people sleep just fine in coach.

It must be hard to believe when the majority of your 5 year-old life has been spent flying first class.

Alice In Wonderland

I'm skeptical. I like the pieces but will I like the sum of their parts.
THE PIECES:
A timeless story. The novel for all ages and cartoon version that rocked my childhood. The Cheshire cat was our pet's namesake. What more can I say?
Tim Burton is nutty genius. I loved Big Fish. I don't know much but I think he keeps food on Helena Bonham Carter's table.
Johnny Depp is obviously very talented.
The previews are visually stunning.

Here are my doubts... Should this story remain an untouched classic? I was not into Tim Burton's remake of Charlie and Chocolate Factory and found Johnny unwatchably creepy. Here's my plan--wait to hear reviews of people I trust, let those reviews tweak my expectations and then go see it.

A Little of This, A Little of That

We highly recommend dining at Otto. The brussels spouts and beets are amazing. The pizza crust cracker thin, olive oil ice-cream is to die for, and the prices are reasonably. Due to scheduling mishap I've been 3 times in 10 days; however if anyone wants to try it out in a few months I'd love an invite.

My feet, on a Saturday no less, have hit a new level of puffiness. Up until this point it's been ankles but today, that love spread all the way down to the toes. At least, for the time being, I have thin ankles at 7:00a.m.

And finally, topping the list of jobs I never want to do--a Starbucks barista. Perhaps if I knew more about coffee it wouldn't be as intimidating. I got uneasy watching the whirlwind as I waited in line for a hot chocolate this morning. (I also have avoided waitressing. Perhaps it has something to do with the extreme importance of food in our house growing up--no room for error.)

After numerous recommendation from respected sources, Jason and I dove into Friday Night Lights. Thanks to Noelle & Matt, we watched Seasons 1 and 2 in record time. It's like a 21st century Beverly Hills 90210 and we can not get enough of the ridiculous, high school drama...plus heart-on-the-line Texas football. Is anyone willing and able to lend us Season 3? We can't wait to be caught up to real time!

GREAT EXPECTATIONS

Seven months down and pregnancy has both surpassed, and not lived up to, my expectations. My cliche philosophy at the onset of this adventure was to "expect the worst and hope for the best." We've all heard the horror stories...swollen noses, 3 months hovering over the porcelain throne, sciatic pain. For others, those 9+ months seem to pass glamorously...thick hair, maternal "glow," little basketball belly. It most ways this has been much "easier" than expected but here a few things that have taken me by surprise.

-I'm asked about cravings regularly. I've had none. I envisioned waking from a sound sleep a sudden, raging urge for fried calamari or pickles. Not so much. In the first trimester I had a slight aversion to burgers, and intermittently I've eaten large quantities of olives, mixed berry yogurt, Parmesan cheese, potato chips, and spinach. But I don't think that had much to do with the pregnancy.

-Where is my luxurious, thickened, flowing hair? I thought after a few months of prenatal vitamins and hormone fluctuations, I'd just wake up with Jen's hair, run my fingers through it and bounce at the door.

-As I reluctantly make the change to elastic waistbands, I am forced to acknowledge how ignorant it was to think I'd wear my old wardrobe, adjust slightly, right up until the delivery. I imagined buttoning my jeans below the bump, wearing longer t-shirts, and leaving my cardigans unbuttoned. Ha, ha, HA! I can pull the jeans up but they are no where near buttoning.

-I can already see Bun moving. My stomach rolls to the left, then jabs to the right. It's fun to watch her get comfortable in there or maybe she's knitting. I've been reminding her to enjoy the space while she has it; it's going to get a lot tighter for both of us.

-Last Thursday I came home from work with swollen ankles. My blood pressure is consistently, pre-pregnancy and during, 110/70. I thought that eliminated any need to worry about ankle swelling. If they're already showing early signs, what in the world will they look like in 3 months!? I don't have a "put your feet up for a few minutes" kind of job. (BTW-I googled images and they were just too gross to post.)

Indigestion, leg cramps, swollen gums, bladder infections, and sleeplessness are a few bullets I've dodged so far. Needless to say, we are very excited for April! We can't wait to meet this little person and I'm looking forward to being able to bend in the middle again.

blah blah blog.

i've had 100 blog post ideas--the holidays that came and went, a relaxing trip to utah, pregnancy observations, a new year...a new DECADE! lots of interesting things happening. but i'm feeling really blah about blogging right now. for now, i'm copying super-clever stacy and posting some 2009 (mostly wedding) memories.
cousins reunion for deandre's wedding...

nina and john got married...

a reunion in san diego for brent & bridgette's wedding...

my beautiful date
a car crashed right into our building...dragging another car with it, taking out a tree, and creating some sunday afternoon chaos.

hopefully i'll be back to real blogging soon... maybe i'll even start capitalizing in 2010.
